More Powerful Together
As the world celebrates International Women’s Day on 8 March 2019, we can’t help but reflect on how far we have come, and yet how much still needs to be done to achieve true gender equity. The United Nation Women’s global theme for the 2019 celebrations is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”. In step with this line of thinking Australia has chosen the parallel theme of “More Powerful Together” to highlight the significant and irrefutable benefits which our society could enjoy were we to achieve true gender equality.
Yet can you recall how many female trades and construction professionals you have met in your lifetime? Would you encourage your daughter, niece or other young female to forge a career in the construction or building industry? Almost half of all property investors in Australia are women, but many still lack the confidence to participate or simply don’t know where to start. Industry data shows that higher levels of working women, lone person, single parent households, divorce and longer lifespans have the effect that almost as many women own property, as compared to men.
It may also surprise you to learn that in the past few years the construction industry has actually been one of the leading sectors in decreasing the gender pay gap! Yet women unfortunately still remain a largely untapped resource in the construction industry. To change this imbalance across the supply chain, we must embrace a significant cultural shift in thinking, educating and role modelling.
Australia’s 2019 theme More Powerful Together highlights the need for all to come together to make positive change happen. Only by breaking down stereotypes and role modelling what is indeed possible, can we create a world where women and girls have equal rights and opportunities.
